Professional tax in India: state rules and salary deductions

Professional tax is state-specific; the amount, threshold, schedule and exemptions should be checked against the applicable state authority and your payroll record.

Practical context, not generic advice

State selection is essential

There is no single national professional-tax amount. A calculator should not silently apply one state’s schedule to another location, especially if you work remotely or move during the year.

Some schedules vary by income band or apply a different amount in one month. That can make a normal month slightly different even when fixed salary is unchanged.

Verify the current schedule

State portals and payroll notices are the right place to confirm the applicable schedule. Keep the payslip deduction and any employer explanation with your salary records.

Run your own salary assumptions in the calculator.
